What Muhurat trading is

Muhurat trading is a short session that NSE and BSE hold on Diwali, on the day of Lakshmi Puja. A muhurat is an auspicious time. For many traders and investors in India the session marks the start of a new year in the traditional Hindu calendar, Samvat, and some place a small order as a token start to the year.

It is a normal trading session in every other way: orders are matched by the exchange as on any day, and trades carry the usual charges.

When it is in 2026

The exchanges list Muhurat trading on Sunday 8 Nov 2026, for Diwali Lakshmi Puja. That is a Sunday, a day the market is normally shut. The date comes from NSE circular NSE/CMTR/71775, Trading Holidays for Calendar Year 2026 (12 Dec 2025) (opens in a new tab), checked on 1 Nov 2026.

Charges on a Muhurat trade

A trade in the Muhurat session is an ordinary trade, so brokerage, STT, exchange charges, the SEBI fee, stamp duty and GST apply as they would on any other day. A small token trade can lose a noticeable share of its value to fixed charges, such as a flat brokerage fee or the DP charge when you later sell from demat.

Work out the charges on your trade

What each charge is, and who receives it, is explained in brokerage charges explained.

What this guide does not cover

  • Whether to trade in the session. RupeeScope does not recommend buying or selling anything.
  • Timings for currency, commodity and other segments, which can differ from the equity session.
  • Your broker's own rules for the day, such as when it closes intraday positions.
