How it works
The calculator works backwards. First it grows the goal at the inflation rate you enter, to find what it may cost when you need it. Then it finds the monthly SIP, or the one-time amount, that grows to that cost at the return you assume.
Cost then = Goal x (1 + inflation)^t. SIP needed = Cost then / SIP factor. Lumpsum needed = Cost then / (1 + r)^t
A worked example
A goal that costs ₹50,00,000 today, in 10 years, with 6 a year inflation, could cost ₹89,54,238 (₹89.54 lakh) by then. At 12 a year, a monthly SIP of ₹38,540 could reach that, which means putting in about ₹46.25 lakh in total. The same goal could be met with one payment of ₹28,83,025 today.
What it leaves out
- Tax on gains.
- Exit load and fund charges.
- Any gap between your inflation guess and the real rise in the cost of your goal.
- Money you may already have saved. Subtract it from the goal first if you do.
Questions people ask
Why does the goal cost more than I typed?
Because the page grows it with inflation. A goal that costs a fixed amount today usually costs more in future rupees. Set inflation to 0 to see the plain version.
What inflation should I use?
No one can know it ahead of time. Prices for different goals, such as education or housing, can rise at different speeds. Try a few values to see the effect.
What return should I assume?
No return is promised. A lower assumption asks for a bigger SIP, so testing a low figure shows how much room you have.
What if I already have some savings?
Take them off the goal amount before you enter it, or work out what they would grow to and subtract that. This page assumes you start from nothing.
How does the yearly step-up option work?
If you enter a step-up, the page also shows the starting monthly amount you would need if you raised the SIP by that percentage every year. It is lower than the flat SIP because later instalments are bigger.
